(Oliver) Hang-Ting Lue is the director of emerging memory R&D division. He has authored and co-authored more than 50 papers in the flagship IEDM and VLSI conferences, including numerous highlight papers, and more than 150 accumulated papers in IEEE journals and conferences. His research interest includes advanced 3D Flash memory devices, 3D memory architectures, computing-in-memory (CIM), in-memory search (IMS), neuromorphic computing, reliability physics. He has been elevated to IEEE Fellow in electron device society (EDS) in 2022.
Future Prospects of Computing in or near Flash Memories
Flash memories are the classic and dominant non-volatile semiconductor memories for decades, and we believe that with new technology advancements, both NAND and NOR Flash will continue to enjoy growing markets. Going to 3D stackable architectures has been proven to be effective for 3D NAND, and likewise NOR Flash also has the potential to go into 3D. In addition to scaling, we expect Flash memory will be getting closer to computing than ever. Higher I/O bandwidth together with latency improvements will enable both NAND and NOR Flash to join computing more intensively instead of simply a storage device in the old times. In addition to the higher density and higher read/write bandwidth, we expect there may be a future paradigm shift of computational Flash memories. Examples are computing in memory (CIM) for MAC accelerator of DNN inference, in-memory search (IMS) or approximate search for edge intelligent smart devices. Both digital and analog computing design methods are possible. We expect a bright future of Flash memories. In this talk I will discuss the status, opportunities, and challenges we’ve observed so far.
